Alabama running back Najee Harris was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft last Thursday. An accomplished player, Harris was a projected first round pick from the beginning.
What was unexpected was how he’d choose to spend his Thursday evening. Rather than attending the Draft in Cleveland, Harris decided to throw a party at the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program homeless shelter, where he slept many nights as a kid.
The night included pizza, chicken, football-themed decorations, cupcakes, and even goodie bags.
Harris’ goal was to show the kids in the shelter that while life might look bleak now, they have the opportunity to turn their lives around and do equally big or bigger things.
“He did not let his situation dictate his future,” said Shelter Manager Siu Laulea, who worked with Harris. “It makes me feel proud and makes me enjoy my job more because I know I made a difference in someone’s life.”
