What to do if you are stranded in your car during a snowstorm

By: Gary Todd

STAY IN YOUR CAR

Do not leave the car to look for help.

Call 911 with your exact location so that when the roads open they know where you are.   It may take hours.

Occasionally start the engine to keep warm, about 10 minutes each hour.

Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow, and open a downwind window slightly for ventilation.

Move to keep up circulation.

Watch for hypothermia and frostbite.

Try not to stay in one position for too long.

If more than one person is in the car, take turns sleeping and huddle up.
