IVCC biology students examine skull specimens

OGLESBY – Illinois Valley Community College biology instructor LeeAnn Johnson’s Principles of Biology lab students received hands-on experience examining real and replica skulls of primitive and modern man as well as primates.  As the culmination of a unit on evolution, students completed data tables by taking measurements of brain case size and observations of several other physical traits of each specimen. The face-to-face lab allowed students to ‘do science safely’ with CDC-recommended protocols of smaller class sizes, wearing of face masks and gloves, social-distancing and hand sanitizing.

Johnson said, “The majority of our face-to-face lab students said this was their favorite class this year solely because of the ‘normalcy’ of physically coming into the college and getting to complete a variety of hands-on activities.”
