Your “Daily Dose of Uplift” for July 15th:
24-year-old sanitation worker Rehan Staton of Maryland called his acceptance into Harvard Law School “the most surreal moment of my life.”
He’s been hustling since a kid, ever since his mom left the country and his father lost his job, leading him to work three jobs just to make end’s meet. Rehan trained to become a boxer in high school, but a torn rotator cuff shattered those dreams before they truly got off the ground.
“At that time, I was really involved in sports, and I thought sports would be a way out of poverty,” he said. “Support from my father and support from my brother, if it wasn’t for those two, it would’ve been impossible.”
Rehan was told by his coworkers that he was too young to resort to being a sanitation worker and urged to go back to school. Rehan worked full-time on top of taking classes at the University of Maryland, where he obtained a 4.0 GPA. That led to his most recent opportunity of getting accepted into Harvard Law. A GoFundMe to help Rehan pay for tuition has already surpassed $180,000.
Rehan also took to social media to pen an open letter to his older brother, who gave him the motivation and courage he needed to succeed.
“My brother knew I’d be stuck if I didn’t jump on this opportunity and go to school because of my grades,” Staton told GMA.
