OTTAWA – The LaSalle County Health Department has confirmed its first human case and death from the West Nile Virus. An elderly LaSalle County resident, who became ill earlier this month and tested positive for West Nile Virus has died. This is the first confirmed death from West Nile Virus in the state of Illinois. According to Chris Pozzi, Director of Environmental Health, the death is a reminder that West Nile virus continues to be a serious health issue. Pozzi mentions that this is the time of year where the potential for human cases increase. According to the LaSalle County Health Department mosquito activity slows down as temperature drops, however until our area experiences a hard freeze, personal protection measures like wearing insect repellent must be taken.
