CHICAGO – The Reverend Jesse Jackson and The Rainbow PUSH-Coalition are calling on the FBI, the Department of Justice, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul to intervene in the death investigation of Jelani Day. Rev. Jackson and PC’s National Field Director Bishop Grant are also asking for a task force to be convened to investigate possible criminal negligence of the Bloomington and Peru police departments and their failure to follow through on this now 58-day-old case.
They are also asking Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul to assign a special prosecutor. Rev. Jackson and Bishop Grant also want the task force to probe allegations that on three occasions the 25-year-old Day told his sister he feared for his life. Bishop Grant said because of confecting information given to Mrs. Day “she does not know if the remains in that vault at Springhill Cemetery belong to her son.“ The scheduled peaceful march with the Rainbow Coalition will take place on Tuesday at noon in front of the Peru Police Department.
The Rainbow PUSH Coalition is helping organize the get-together that will begin in front of the station before moving to the Illinois Valley YMCA, where Day’s vehicle was found abandoned on August 26th, one day after he was reported missing. Day’s body was found on September 4th near the Illinois River. Day’s mother Carmen Bolden Day, has previously stated that she believes her son did not put himself in the river. According to Reverend Jackson, the march is not a march on the city of Peru, but a march in Peru to give the Day family closure.
