Tax Season Can Lead to Scams

DIXON – An Illinois Sheriff is warning the public that tax time also means it will be time for scammers to prey on the public. Sheriff John C. Simonton of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said that callers are identifying themselves as IRS agents and demanding payment. They may say you will be arrested and ask you to call another number to submit payment. If you receive a call similar to this do not give any personal information or contact the number given. If you have a legitimate issue with the IRS they will not contact you by phone to resolve this issue. Another scam that has been occurring lately has been one involving a person posing as a friend on social media asking for money to play a lottery type game. Simonton suggests not sending money and contacting authorities.
