Statewide Unemployment Rate Down, Payroll Jobs Up in April

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced that the unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate was 1.0 percentage point higher than the national unemployment rate reported for last month, which was 3.6 percent, unchanged from the previous month. The Illinois unemployment rate was down -2.0 percentage points from a year ago when it was at 6.6 percent. The number of unemployed workers was down from the prior month, a decrease to 296,400 and was down -29.2 percent over the same month one year ago.
