Soil Cleanup Continuing at Elementary School

LASALLE – The Environmental Protection Agency’s cleanup is nearing its end at Northwest Elementary School in LaSalle, but mother nature continues to hold things off. According to Superintendent Brian DiBernardi, the recent rainfall has postponed bringing in the new soil fill and laying down sod. The EPA spent much of last week pumping out water from the remediation site, where excess rainwater pooled from the school’s water run off area.  The finishing touches of the clean up are expected to be completed by the end of this month. Bernardi says the school plans to plant a variety of native trees and shrubs near the site. The cleanup is in response to soil contamination from the former Matthiessen and Hegeler Zinc Company in LaSalle.
