OGLESBY – Illinois Valley Community College graduate Devanshi Patel of La Salle was honered with college’s Frederick W. Matthiessen Award. Patel is transferring to Northern Illinois University this fall and plans to eventually attend medical school and become a physician. She was the salutatorian of the La Salle Peru Township High School class of 2018, finishing second in a class of 253.
IVCC announced the Matthiessen winner at its 54th Annual Commencement May 16, a ceremony delivered in an online, ‘virtual’ format due to the pandemic.
The Matthiessen, among the college’s most prestigious honors, is awarded only periodically to graduates who demonstrate academic excellence and extraordinary service to the college and community. Frederick W. Matthiessen, 1835-1918, was a philanthropist and industrialist instrumental in the creation of Matthiessen State Park and the development of LP High School, among many other humanitarian and public service works.
