Ottawa residents standing up against city’s used motor vehicle tax

OTTAWA – Community members in the city of Ottawa plan to petition a used motor vehicle tax. Denetta Flamingo, who addressed council members about the 0.5% tax on all titled motor vehicles Tuesday night, says she’s hoping to get a referendum on the November ballot. According to her attorney, 989 registered voters in the city of Ottawa will have to sign the petition before taking it to the county to place on the ballot. According to community members at Tuesday’s council meeting, the tax came just after Christmas and were given 30 days to pay. Mayor Dan Aussem responded by saying the ordinance was passed in 2004, just never implemented. Flamingo says much of the community wasn’t aware of the dormant ordinance, especially the younger generation. She says the city needs to know they can’t do a money grab from the community without having resistance.
