Old Utica bridge imploded Thursday

UTICA – With a thunderous boom the old bridge over the Illinois River in Utica was imploded Thursday morning.  Crews detonated the metal framed structure, built in the early sixties just before 8 AM.  Illinois 178 was closed temporarily during the detonation, but was opened by mid-day.  Cranes and crews worked the rest of the day to remove portions of the bridge from the bottom of the Illinois River.  The new bridge, part of a $27.4 million dollar project that added shoulders and a much needed pedestrian and bike path, was opened in October
