New State Laws for Children and Backseat Riders in 2019

SPRINGFIELD – New seatbelt and child passenger laws will come into effect in Illinois in just a few weeks. In a new state law that will take effect beginning on January 1st, 2019 all backseat passengers in Illinois will be required to use a seatbelt. According to Buckle Up Illinois,  the law change that will also be in affect beginning the new year, requires children under the age of two years to ride rear-facing. A child less than 8 years of age must be secured in an appropriate child restraint system as well. Fines start at $25 and may vary depending on associated court costs for backseat passenger violators, and 75 dollar fines in the first offense for failing to properly restrain a child passenger.
