Midewin Prairie talk coming to LaSalle Library

By: Forest Service, Eastern Region

LASALLE – A discussion about the history of the USDA Forest Service’s Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, plus its flora and fauna will be coming to the LaSalle Public Library. On Tuesday at 6 PM the library will virtually host Veronica Hinke, Midewin Public Affairs Officer and Public Services Team Leader, when she presents the second part of “Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie 101.” At one time, tallgrass prairies dominated over sixty percent of the landscape in Illinois – over 21 million acres. Presently, less then one hundredth of one percent of Illinois is native tallgrass prairie. The USDA Forest Service’s Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is located on 18,500 acres in Wilmington where the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant once stood.
