Leland Chief says standoff incident could have been worse

LELAND – Leland’s Police Chief commended officers in their work subduing a 19-year-old Ottawa man who reportedly shot himself multiple times in the head during a standoff Wednesday night. According to Police Chief Jason Bragg, police were called just after 11 p.m. for an armed individual in downtown Leland. Bragg said that’s where they found 19-year-old Nicholas J. Bantista pointing what appeared to be a hand gun in the direction of officers. During the 4 minute standoff that followed, Chief Bragg said Bantista repeatedly asked police to shoot him, before he allegedly shot himself in the temple with what was reportedly a C02 powered BB Gun. According to Braggs, Bantista continued to shoot himself in the head as he ran towards a general store before being subdued. One officer was injured but declined treatment. Chief Bragg said the situation could have been worse, and he’s glad officers had a good demeanor, training and restraint. According to Bragg the kind of BB gun Bantista used what not an average BB Gun, with this one having a more powerful impact. Bragg says after speaking with Bantista following the incident, he’s confident he’s doing well. Bantista is at Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital in Sandwich under evaluation. Criminal charges are pending.
