Knee high by the 4th of July: Where does LaSalle Co. corn crop stand?

OTTAWA – The fourth of July isn’t just the nation’s independence day, according to an old farming proverb, its a benchmark for corn crops. If all is well, corn should be knee high by the fourth of July, but in previous years its been as high as an elephant’s eye. So where does corn stand considering the mass amounts of rainfall this spring? LaSalle County Farm Bureau President David Isermann says the height varies. Some corn stalks are knee high, some ankle high, and few that are head high. But just because some corn is knee high, doesn’t mean that all is well. Isermann says by this time last year, corn was about ready to pollinate and that’s certainly not happening this year. Because corn wasn’t planted in the most favorable conditions, it still needs time to dig its roots. He says farmers are still at the mercy of the weather. As the year goes on, the more vital it is for the weather to cooperate; not just bringing hot weather, but regular rainfall and a late frost.
