OGLESBY – Illinois Valley Community College will be partnering with Kankakee Community College to offer an “Introduction to American Sign Language” course starting in February. Instructor Sherry Kinzler will teach the basics of learning American Sign Language (ASL) beginning with vocabulary, grammar and culture. Because ASL is a visual/manual language, students will turn off their voices and develop visual skills with the hands, face and body. Classmates will work together to communicate with each other and deaf community members in routine social interactions. Participants must have internet access and a Gmail address, an ASL dictionary, notebook and ability to record yourself with a phone or laptop.
Educators can earn 14 professional development hours by completing the course. The class will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 9 through March 30 in an online live format.
