EPA continues to monitor Carus Chemical site, hotline provided for community

LASALLE – The explosion and fire at Carus Chemical in LaSalle is contained and officials are proud to announce no serious injuries to workers or first responders. Officials with Carus LLC, the Environmental Protection Agency, and city representatives convened on Wednesday afternoon to update the community on the 9 a.m. explosion that brought numerous fire agencies to the fully engulfed scene. According to Fire Chief Jerry Janick, the fire was contained by noon, with all carus personnel accounted for. Janick says one firefighter was treated for minor injuries. EPA officials say they are continuing to take tests and monitor air quality. A substance described as an oxidizer that was allegedly released from the explosion can cause staining on the skin, but can be safely rinsed away, and does not pose a health threat. A 1:1:1 mixture of : 1 gallon of water, 1 gallon of peroxide, 1 gallon of vinegar will remove the stain.
