Army Corps Plans to Close Six Locks on Illinois River

By: Mike Goad

ROCK ISLAND – The Army Corps of Engineers is readying plans to do a major overhaul of the Illinois River transportation system.  The work, beginning in 2019 and going through 2020, will involve closing six of the locks on the Illinois River for major reconstruction.  This construction will have a major impact on the Illinois River, not only with the moving of materials via barges, but for recreational boating and fishing as well from lock to lock. The Army Corps says they will not change the way they maintain the levels, but the locks themselves will be closed during the construction time.
